Colors for your Skin Tone

"Which color suits my skin tone?" is one of the questions that we often hear from our clients. Though we shouldn't limit the colors we wear to our skin tone, some colors will make you shine more based on your skin tone. So, for those of you who would like an insight to that, here is a little guideline of what color suits your skin best!

Skin Tone and Skin Undertone

The first thing to do is to find out your skin tone. The four main skin tone is light, fair, medium and deep. Other than that, it is also helpful to know about your skin undertone, which can be warm, cool, or neutral.

How do I determine my skin undertone?

One easy way is to check your veins! If you have more purple and bluish veins, you have a cool undertone, but if it is more greenish, you have a warm undertone. If your veins tend to look a bit more blended into your skin color, most likely you have a neutral undertone.

If you have a warm undertone, warm colors like red, yellow and peachy hues will suit you. If you have a cool undertone, cool colors such as blue will look more flattering on you. When choosing a pink colour, cool tone should pick one that is closer to the blues, like magenta, and warm tone should choose something a bit more orange, like peach. For those of you who have a neutral undertone, most colors, warm or cool will still be a good choice for you! To play it safe, try to stay nearer to the neutrals too, don't go too bright as it may look contrasting on your skin.

White vs Off-White

Another way is to try out your whites. Cool undertones tend to look better in true white, while warm undertones will look better with off-white. As seen in the photo, an off-white dress like this looks great on our client who has a warm undertone. It compliments her skin tone well as it creates harmony with the warm tone.

Colours For Different Skin Tones

Whilst we have to match our undertone color, we have to avoid similar shades on our skin tone instead. If you have pale skin, try to avoid light pastels and monochromatic colors, because these colors may make you look paler. For light skin, avoid nude colors which look similar to your skin tone and use earthy tones or monochromatic colors instead. For medium skin, you can explore more on the brighter colors that are contrasting to your skin color. Rest assured as most colors will look good on you! For those who have a deep skin tone, you can explore lighter colors like pastels and whites. Even darker colors like navy and black will still look great, but do try to avoid using brown head-to-toe!

Don't be afraid to explore more colors! Once you found the colors for you, dressing up and choosing garments would be much easier. The golden rule in finding the right color for you is to follow your skin undertone, and avoid similar shades to your skin tone. At the end of the day, choose a colour that makes you feel good!
